  2. I can't believe that Keav died. All of the things that Loung was imagining happened to her. What shocked me is how the father told the family that they'd have to keep going in their lives or the Angkar will think them weak. They couldn't even grieve for her death!

  3. I didn't expect Keav to die so suddenly it must have been so hard on pa and ma especially pa because that was his first daughter and he didn't get to see her before she passed away.

What a great comment. We completely agree with you Madison. Being his first daughter must have tortured him. Keep reading!!

  6. Reading about Keav's death actually made me want to cry while reading. To loose a child is hard enough but especially during a time where all you have is your family. I wonder if Pa felt any regret or guilt for sending Keav to the teen work camp.

  7. Agreed Cecily maybe if Pa didn't send her to the teen work camp she'd still be alive, that must have really torn him apart inside.

  8. I agree with Cecily and Madison. I actually cried during this chapter. A good book can take over your emotions in a heart beat. Pa is completely torn apart. I don't know if he is blaming himself. This seemed like the best alternative and a way to keep his family safe from finding out their secret (that they are from the city). Unfortunately, the family wasn't kept from harms way 100% ...

do you think the Khmer Rouge killed Keav in a way?

  11. This chapter was really upsetting. I couldn't believe the way they treated Keav when she was at the infirmary. They just left her there to die. The employees could care less what happened to her. All Keav wanted was to live long enough to see all of her family at once, but she died before she could even get that. It's really depressing.

  12. I can't get over the fact the Keav died. It must of been agonizing at the fact that she died alone and she was treated poorly at the infirmary. No one helped her and nobody was there for her.

I agree with Kayla because none of the employers were helping her. Keav was too weak to take care of herself, which caused her to die.

It's must have been heart-wrenching for her parents because they hadn't seen her for months. To see her dead and not hear her last words, must have affected them deeply.
The frustrating part was that, the entire family had to let go of the fact that Keav died and had to get back to work. This chapter was extremely emotional.

  14. Honestly what had happen to keav was absolutely sad. Knowing she died alone at least she had faith in herself.

  15. I certaintly didn't expect Keav to die.
And to know she died alone at the infirmary, made me feel even worse.
But I can almost imagine how Pa must feel after all this. And I wonder if he blames himself for sending her away.

  16. It was so completely random that Keav died. It was horrible how they couldn't cry over her because then it would make them seem week. Loung's thoughts of how Keav died was extremely sad.

  17. Considering I played her role in our recent Silent Film, I am surprised at how suddenly but tragic her death was. We know that diarrhea is painful to begin with. But to die with severe diarrhea?? As hard as this is to say, but she is probably better off dead than alive.

  18. I wouldn't never think that she be the first one to die, first they killed my father... maybe she might killed who he is. What made me think and feel bad is that she was my age, that could have been anyone. I bet many kids our age died. I don't know if it was better that they were not there to be with her or be there and have their last look of her, being in pain. The one thing that makes me feel better is that they are all going to be together one day in heaven.
