This is a section that is dedicated to the young bright minds of the GLC. Please feel free to post questions or topics for discussion from the book here.

This is a picture of Phnom Penh after the Khmer Rouge takeover.

  1. I am so proud of the GLC students for the time and thought you're putting in to your work with this book. It is an intense story about a difficult part of our world and it shows great global citizenship that you are tackling these issues head on. Keep up the good work.

  2. I wonder why Kim's Ma didn't stop him from stealing corn from the cornfields. She knew what might happen to him if he got caught but she still didn't stop him. I know they will do anything for food but why would you risk your own child's life?

  4. Madison - Sadly, Ma knew that she was putting her son in danger but they are desperate for food. I think Kim would've went anyway even if ma told him to stay home. He is the man of the family now (since Meng and Khouy don't live with them). Personally, I don't know what I would do in this situation. To risk any child's life, let alone your own is devastating and unreasonable.

  5. Nyree - your thoughts were exactly like mine when I rad the book for the first time. I just couldn't believe that this really happened. So many lives lost and for what? A sense of power?

  6. This picture gives a better image for how it was like to be in town when the Khmer Rouge was taking over.
This is just to show how it was like to have your city invaded and be trashed.

  7. There are parts of the book I really like. Sometimes when I read the book at home for homework I forget to stop reading. This picture really is sad. Imagine if something like this happened to New York. It kind of gives me the chills.

  8. This book actually help make my imagination. Eveytime I read the book i can actually imagine all of these events happening. Thinking about it, its very hard for Loung to be living on her own working hard training to be a child soilder, personally I woul just give up and want to die.

  9. I really like this book. It is so intense and gripping. Every time I read this book, I always wonder what it would be like to be in one of the character's place. They are innocent people getting tortured for no reason. This picture shows how much cruelty has occurred to several people in Cambodia. Loung and her family have been brave throughout out the Khmer Rouge. Even though Loung has lost many of her loved ones in the Khmer Rouge, she always knows that they will be in her heart and never be forgotten.
