Chapter 14 - ma's little monkey

Would you expect a member of your family to steal food and get beat for his/her actions if your family was starving?

  1. At only 12 years old Kim has a lot on his plate. He is now the head of his family and is risking his life for his ma and sisters. I'm relieved the Khmer Rouge soldiers let him go when he got caught stealing, it's just so sad how he can't express to anyone how scared he is and how much he misses his Pa, because he thinks his family will think him weak.

  2. It really bothers me that Kim was beat for food and that ma got beaten up for trying to trade gold earrings for chicken. It's really hard to think of one of your family members getting beaten up because they are trying to get food me you. I think I'd rather starve...it's one of those questions that is so hard to answer....

  3. If i stole food to feed my family, and keep them alive i would be greatly appreciated by my family, but the people around me would think badly about myself, but at the end of the day it doesnt matter because whatever keeps us alive and happy its alright.

  5. Since Kim is the man of the house (for now), he has to take care of his family. He didn't want his family to starve, which urged him to steal food for them. The soldiers didn't catch him stealing food for a few weeks, but he was going to get caught at some point. I felt devastated when the soldiers caught him stealing because they beat him repeatedly just because he was attempting to get food for his family, but at the same time I felt happy that the soldiers didn't kill him. Thankfully, they let him go with a warning. Honestly, if one of my family members had to risk their life to support us with food, I wouldn't let them harm their life. I would rather starve than lose relatives.

I agree with Ms. Salvate because it really is a hard question to answer.

  6. As of now Kim is the man of the house and he should take responsibility. Also know as family comes first. Knowing he has to steal food he is fully thinking of his family even if it means to steal, Kim is doing the right thing.

  7. I expect in away for me steal food or at least to some thing to help my family if we were starving but I would never expect a family member to get beat for his/her actions but I would always keep in mind that at any moment that some thing bad can happen.

  8. Yes I do ! I agree with Madison and Raymond on the fact that Kim for now has to be the glue for the family. It sucks that he has gotten caught stealing food and beaten for it but no matter what it was for his family. I would do almost anything to provide for my family. That's what love does to us.

  9. I would definitely expect a family member to steal food if we were starving. I think that if they were to get caught they would get into a lot of trouble but not beaten as much as Kim. When reading this chapter I almost forgot how young Kim was and how much he has to do for his family. He has a lot on his shoulders and has a lot of responsibilities that a kid of his age shouldn't have.
