  1. 1.When Phnom Penh got destructed it hard every one, kids the most. Some didn't even know what is happening before they went thought all the pain, mostly loosening family. As Phnom Penh got destroy the kids life's and childhood's got destroy too.
    2. I think Meng, Eang and Loung always seem to have people like them! But they still didn't have it easy for them in their new life in Vietnam. But they don't really know anyone, "The boat passengers wave wildly, laughing and yelling the names of friends and family."

  3. 1.Well first when all of this was happening I agree with Nelly, Luong wasnt really aware of what was happening before it reached them,. And as it went on people memeories and family members where getting killed and destroyed.

    2. Their facing anew life in vietnam seems their comfortable with having people around them of the same level. Their life isnt easy but I guess their making the best out of what they have.

  5. I also agree with Nelly. She was innocent and believed what the Khmer Rouge said when they invaded. She thought they could actually go back in 3 days like they sad. It killed her innocence when she found out what was happening in reality.

They coped by doing what they're used to doing. They listened to what they were told to make sure that they survive. For example, Loung gave up her buddha despite how much it meant to her.

  6. 1. When Loung had entered Phnom Penh, Loung had no idea what it was going to be like. Then when she saw how destroyed it was, it brought back memories of all she went through.

    2. Meng, Eang, and Loung didn't really know what they were going into when they went to Vietnam. They didn't know anyone, but at the same time they were greeted with hospitality from Eang's family.

  7. 1. The distruction of phnom pehn was confusing and hard, especially on kids because they are so innocent. Something like this is emotionally scarring. When your exposed to something like this child or adult, you never are the same.
    2. On one side Meng, Eang, and loung are surrounded by people like them, but like Kayla said it's just what they are used to, being around the Khmer rouge destroyed her will power, she does as she is told which in some scenerarios is good but in this one it's wrong, she gave up in my opinion the last thing about herself worth keeping, she gave up her Buddha.

  8. 1.It shows the hard ship that the kids of phnom penh went through. the things they have to give, the lives that are no longer there. How there lives changed and they couldn't change it and make things back to what it was before. How kids learn not to trust people. An example is "then suddenly,a picture of met bong lunging at the fisherman's throat with her sickle flashes before my eyes."

2.They had to do what they always did, cope and do what they wanted to be able to leave and live a other day. While at the same time they try to forget what has happened to them and they try to move on with there lives. Meng and Loung was lucky to have Eang's family to live with. But some times things go bad. An example of that is when loung and meng, eang live on a boat and one day some vietnamese takes there stuff.

  9. 1. Loung was really young when the Khmer Rouge had invaded Phnom Penh. She wasn't quite sure what was happening until seeing the cruel misery everyone had to go through. Loung was probably really traumatized after seeing the results of how Phnom Penh looked. She didn't expect it to be entirely destroyed, but after all, the Khmer Rouge invaded it. It affected her and many others in a negative way because it was their hometown full of childhood and memories and now it was fully demolished. It affected the innocence of children because they had to witness brutal killings, losing their home, and losing their family members. Several children believed that the war would be over in a few days because the soldiers said so, but it was all a lie. Children and adults had to find out the hard way that, they weren't going to come back to their hometown for several years.

    2. Meng, Eang, and Loung were confused on what exactly to expect from Vietnam. They coped as best as they could with what was happening with them in Vietnam because they already dealt with the Khmer Rouge. Living in Vietnam, would be a big step of change from how they were treated in Cambodia. They didn't know anyone, but it was better than anything. It was definitely not the easiest way of living their life, but they had to make the best out of it. I agree with Amber and Kayla because she gave up one of the most important things she had lasted throughout the Khmer Rouge- Pa's Buddha. It wasn't her fault because the pirates forced her to give it, but it must of been a tough moment for her because it was the only cherishing memory she had of Pa's.

  11. 1.Well to go through that as a child s very hard and your innocense turns into anger and it builds up, yet you don't understand that your being brainwashed because your a child.
    2. The three of them coped pretty well. Although they were kind of parinoid or worried about exactly wat would happen in vietnam. But as a result it was a big change for loung and her brother and wife. But they will get use to itover time...untill the war is over and they send for the rest of the family!

  12. 1. The destruction of phenom phen really effected the life of Loung and many other cambodian children. I feel that ever since the khmer rouge came their characters changed real quickly. I also believe that it gave them courage and made them stronger.

    2. When they all arrived at vietnam, they really didnt know what to expect. They thought that they were going to go through the same thing that they had gone through when they were with the foster family, but they were greeted so nicely i think that they're going to like it there.

  13. Phenom Penh was the lifestyle that was to shape the beginning of Loung's life. Middle class, fortunate, happy. The destruction of Phenom Penh actually is a lot like the wake up call for Loung. As everything unfolded in Phenom Penh, (killings, bombs, fires etc) little by little, the realistic part of life was hitting Loung. There was no good reason why, but in her head, she sees blood, people dying, and mean faces. And as Cambodia deteriorated, so did Loung's childhood, innocense, and life. And all she could do was move on and hope to stay alive, like every Cambodian in 1975.

    2. While in Vietnam, the new Ung family had to stay low key. In chapter 26, on page 222 Loung says 'In Saigon (Vietnam), Meng's face grows fuller each day from the spring rolls and soups that Eang makes. My body is also filling out my clothes everywhere..' Since Eang has Vietnamese connections, shes able to provide ample supplies for herself, Meng and Loung. This allows them to live better by eating, sleeping and even get thier hair done !

  15. 1. The Khmer Rouge soldiers came into the city and ruined it. They had no quilt as they tore down the buildings and killed people. As the children kept seeing abuse and violence I think they thought it was okay for them to act like that. Most children are influenced by the adults they are surrounded by everyday. They saw the soldiers' killing family members and destroying villages and anger built up inside of them.

    2. When Loung, Meng, and Eang stayed in Vietnam they had to adjust to the different culture. Loung described how she saw women in bathing suits for the first time and how she thought it wasn't proper to wear. I think they were relieved to be away from Cambodia and the war going on.

  16. The kids had to stop thinking about their old lives. No more toys, no more running around and having fun with friends or school. Also, they had to become heartless and work all day with little food/rest

  17. of course everything that happened made them sad, they will never forget what happened. I think that they are also kinda messed up in the head as well. But its what was to be expected. Now, after leaving for a new home , it should make them stronger for any other new experiences the future may bring.

  18. 1- The destruction of phenom phen it really affected the life of Loung and others cambodian childrens. I think that, when the khmer rouge came into their life it really change everythin in absolute! they absorb alot of bad thing when everything happen so that made them bad.

2- At fisrt When they all get at vietnam, they really didnt know what were going to be over there. They maybe thought that they were going to paas through the same thing that they had gone through.

  20. 1.the destruction of phenom phen affected childern's healt not only emotionaly but mentaly. Thouse images of there family members dying and houses getting blown ur are always going to scar them for life. Sence there in a early age there going to be affected for ever.

When they had to go to vietnam Loung had to adjust to the culture and how people lived there. The first time she saw a women wear a swim suit she thought it was inapropiate but atleast Loung was happy to be away from all the war that was unfourtionaly happening.
